SEMINAR PRESENTATION: What to do in an Emergency:
What to do, How to get help, Who to call and How to get home
Date: Thursday, May 1st 7:00 PM at the Clubhouse
Presenter: Sky Losier, Station Leader at the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station, Salt Spring Island
About the Presentation: Ever wonder how you would respond under the pressure of a real marine emergency? As we enter the 2025 boating season, this presentation will provide vital safety information for both the novice and experienced boaters, from the Station Leader at the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station on Salt Spring Island. By providing practical guidance on what to do, who to call, and how to get home in the event of a marine emergency you will be better prepared to deal with the next situation – and not panic!
About the Presenter: Sky Losier is the Station Leader and a Coxswain (Captain) at Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 25 on Salt Spring Island and is one of 11 qualified RCMSAR Headquarters Training Centre Instructors throughout the province. Sky is the youngest RCMSAR Coxswain to qualify as an Instructor, and at the time of his certification, he was one of the youngest Coxswains in the organization’s history. Sky’s involvement with RCMSAR started when he was 17 and a student at Gulf Islands Secondary School, when he helped found the first Junior Crew Program, which is still active today.
Sky grew up on Mayne Island, in the heart of the Salish Sea and has been navigating these waters since he could walk. His love of the natural world that surrounds us propelled him towards a career working on Parliament Hill to protect the waters he has always called home. After years working and traveling across Canada, Sky realized there is no place like home, and moved back to BC and began to pursue his dream of becoming a professional mariner.
Sky is described by those who know him as “happiest on the water”. When he isn’t operating water taxis and deep sea launches, running eco-adventure tours sharing his love of the Salish Sea, or answering a marine distress call on a dark and stormy night, you can find Sky smiling and exploring his home waters aboard his Ericson 29.
Note that the above session might include a “man overboard” session in May, with date and time to be determined.
