In Flying Fifteen, Members, Public
Following Tom McKeachie’s super engaging VHF Radio Refresher workshop, individuals keen on practicing talking on the radio, listening, and comprehending VHF radio messages will do so on a follow-up workshop offered by Jean, a ham radio operator and F15 Sailor, Oct 17th.
 Let’s Overcome Marine Radio Hesitancy!

Let’s get comfortable talking on the air.
Thursday Oct 17 at 7:00-8:30 the women of the Flying 15 Team have booked the Sailing Club to practice their new skills on the radio.
  • Your first time? Perfect!
  • Experienced?  Come share your confidence.
Max of 15 participants. Minimum of 3.
SISC Club and family members are invited to join in with the Flying 15 Sailors’ practice.
Jean Burgess, aka ham radio operator Quin VA7 DHT, is facilitating a ‘hands on the radio’ practice designed for Sailors and People who are onboard boats of all kinds.
In small groups, you will:
  1. turn on the radio,
  2. switch to a ‘working channel’,
  3. practice how to transmit and respond to a call,
  4. give ‘Securité’, ‘Pan Pan’ and ‘May Day May Day’, and Relayed messages, and
  5. conduct a normal communication about weather and seas.
You’ll start struggling to hear the messages over the static, and leave with your ear trained to decipher the staticky messages =it’s fun and an awesome safety tool.
We will be practicing in the Club house and also on the grounds, actually using our radios. Dress for both locations.
Send an email to flyingfifteen@saltspringsailing.ca if you are attending. A few last minute SISC member drop-ins are also welcome.
Let us know if you are bringing a radio and what type. Bring any ‘hand held radio’ you have – marine VHF,  GMRS (walkie talkie) or ham VHF radio. Jean will supply extra GMRS and Marine VHF radios as needed.
Expect to have fun and to leave more comfortable speaking into a radio, and attuning your ear to hearing words spoken on the air.
